HATS
Our hats come to life in the state of Campeche, Mexico in the workshop of Antonio and his family, our artisans. The hats are handmade by the family. They grow in their land the jipijapa / toquilla straw that came from Ecuador in the 19th century.
The brothers Sixto and Pedro García introduced the plant to Mexico they planted Jipijapas in the henequen-growing hacienda Santa Cruz. The artisans relying on the Mayan tradition of basketry adopted the plant as a raw material in the making of "Panama" hats.
Panama hats became world famous during the construction of the Panama Canal, when thousands of hats were imported from Ecuador for workers and worn by famous people like Frank Sinatra.
Each hat is woven and shaped using a traditional process requiring no less than two weeks of work. When the hat is colored with different local plants, the process requires two more weeks if weather conditions are optimal.
